Albert Sliep (1921-2011)

My father Albert Sliep passed away yesterday 7 October 2011 in Truro,
Cornwall, England. He was born on 20 May 1921 in Franekryk, Friesland,
the Netherlands. He experienced the invasion of the Netherlands in
World War II, on one occasion was captured by German soldiers. He
resolved not to go to Germany and managed to escape from the prison
camp. During the war he led an underground Boy Scout cub pack in
Hilversum, Before the war broke out his brother, Huite had gone to
Scotland to train for the ministry. From Scotland, Uncle Huite
immigrated to South Africa as a missionary. My father, unable to
settle in post-war Netherlands followed him to South Africa. He joined
the Boy Scouts in South Africa and was responsible for the black
schools feeding scheme in Transkei. Later he would choose between the
position of Secretary-General of the Boy Scouts and training as a
minister of the Free Church of Scotland. He choose the Lord's work. He
went to Edinburgh for his theological training. In Edinburgh he found
lodging at the Royal Blind School. At the same time a Scottish lady
was also beginning work at the Royal Blind School. Miss MacLaren was a
Girl Guide, a member of Scripture Union and enjoyed cycling, the match
was perfect. They married in Scotland and returned to South Africa, to
work with the Free Church in Southern Africa. My father held various
charges around present day Eastern Cape. Where ever they lived they
organised the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides and my father was Chief Scout
of Transkei, during Transkei independence. He also preached in various
churches, including the Baptist, Methodist and Church of England.
Finally along with their eldest daughter, they immigrated to Cornwall,
England.
My mother, my sisters and me will miss our Pappa. He truly loved us
all. I am grateful that my mother and sisters were able to be with him
to the end. He also leaves behind grandchildren and a recently born
great-grandchild. I am hoping to be able to join them in England.

Thank-you for your prayers.
